How many times do you need to see a word to keep it? More than you think

The problem

You read a text, you look up a word, you write it down. You’re pleased: one more word. Two weeks later you meet it again and it looks brand new. You feel like you’re filling a leaky bucket.

The bucket isn’t leaking. A word seen once was never in the bucket.

What the research found

Learning a word isn’t an event, it’s an accumulation. Uchihara, Webb and Yanagisawa (2019) pooled 26 studies in which learners read or listened to texts with no instruction to learn, and in which researchers counted how often each word appeared. The link between the number of encounters and the chance of keeping the word is clear: an average correlation of r = 0.34, which, for something as noisy as word memory, is a solid and consistent effect. More encounters, more words kept — with no visible ceiling in the data.

How many, then? Webb (2007) had learners meet invented words 1, 3, 7 or 10 times, in different sentences. At ten encounters, gains reached almost every aspect of the word: its form, its meaning, its grammar, the words that go with it. At one or three, learners recognised the word without being able to use it. The exact number varies across studies, but the order of magnitude is constant: it takes several encounters, spaced out and in different contexts, before a word becomes yours.

It isn’t only about the number. Nation (2007) describes the four “strands” of a good language programme: meeting the word in comprehension (listening, reading), producing it (speaking, writing), studying it deliberately, and retrieving it fast (fluency). A word that passes through only one strand stays fragile.

Do this today

Pick five words from your last lesson. For each one, organise three encounters today, in three ways: find it in the text, write a sentence of your own with it, say that sentence out loud. Tomorrow, a fourth: try to recall it without looking at anything.

Five words, four encounters, two days. It takes no longer than learning twenty words once — and more of it will stay.

How our lessons use it

In “Je m’appelle Nadia”, the key words — s’appeler, habiter, aimer — come back in the story, in the questions, in the answers, then in your own sentences when you introduce yourself “your way”. Four contexts for the same word, without you having to organise anything. Come back to the lesson on day 3 and day 14: two more encounters.

The honest limit

Frequency studies mostly concern reading and adult learners; the numbers shift with level, word type and how “kept” is measured. And meeting a word ten times without ever understanding it does nothing: the encounter has to be comprehensible. That’s why the Récits sit one notch above your level, not three.

Your questions

Does the same word ten times on the same page count?

Less than you'd hope. The encounters that count are spaced and varied: the word in a sentence, then in a question, then in your own mouth. Ten times in a row is one long encounter, not ten.

Should I learn words from lists or from texts?

Both, at different moments. The list fixes the form; the text gives the use. A list alone gives you words you recognise without knowing how to use them.

I don't meet the words often enough in real life. What can I do?

Organise the encounters yourself: the same word in the story, in the vocabulary list, in your own sentence, then in the review. That's exactly what a Récit does.
