The problem
You read an article in French and understand nearly all of it. Then the woman at the bakery asks you a simple question and there’s nothing: sounds rushing past, not one word you can catch. You tell yourself you’re “bad at listening”, when in fact you probably know every word she used. You’ve seen them a hundred times. You’ve just never heard them.
Your real problem isn’t vocabulary: your ear and your eyes have never been introduced.
What the research found
Rob Waring and his colleagues asked a simple question of 35 Japanese university students of English, at pre-intermediate to intermediate level (Brown, Waring & Donkaewbua, 2008). Each student met three graded stories in three different ways: reading only, reading while listening to the recording, or listening only. In each story, 28 invented words replaced ordinary ones, so the researchers could measure exactly what was picked up along the way.
The result is harsh for listening on its own. When students were asked to give the meaning of the words they had met, those who had only listened could recall about 2%, against about 16% for those who had read while listening. On an easier multiple-choice test the gap held: roughly 29% of words recognised after listening only, compared with 48% after reading with audio.
Why? In speech, words have no edges. The stream never stops to let you think, and a word you can’t cut out of the flow stays as noise. When the text scrolls alongside, your eyes show your ear where a word starts and where it ends. The written form you already know attaches itself to the spoken form, and that link is exactly what you’re missing today.
A longer study points the same way (Webb & Chang, 2015). Sixty-one Taiwanese students read ten graded readers while listening to the audio over a term. Of a hundred words tracked, gains reached 44% straight afterwards and 37% three months later. Reading while listening isn’t a comfort activity: it’s one of the most robust ways research knows of moving what you know on paper into your ear.
Do this today
Take a short French audio clip you have the text for, one minute at most. Listen once without reading anything, even if you understand almost nothing: that’s normal, it’s the starting point. Then play it again, following the text with your eyes, without pausing. You’ll feel words “light up”: you knew them, you’d just never recognised them. That link is exactly what you’re building, and five minutes is enough.
How our lessons use it

Watch it once without reading, try to answer the questions, then listen again: the second time, the words come apart. Its shadowing version takes the same story with pauses so you can repeat after each sentence, which fixes the sound of the words in your mouth. And if you want to work the reading side, « Je m’appelle Nadia » is there in the same spirit: read, hide, recall. Start with « L’ascenseur ».
The honest limit
The 2008 study looked at 35 Japanese students learning English, with invented words, and gains were modest in every mode: three months later, most words had been forgotten. It doesn’t say listening alone is useless, nor that French behaves exactly like English. It shows a direction: when the ear is lost, giving it the text alongside helps far more than leaving it to fend for itself.
Your questions
Should I stop reading so much and only listen?
No. Reading isn't your problem, it's your strength. The idea is to use it as a crutch for your ear: listen without the text, then listen again with the text in front of you.
How many times should I listen to the same passage?
Twice is enough to start: once blind, once reading along. If you feel like it, a third listen without the text shows you how far you've come.
