The problem
On the bus, you prepare what you will say to the pharmacist. You turn the sentence over in your head, you polish it, it is perfect. You push the door, you open your mouth, and it is a different world: the words you had lined up so carefully are not there any more. You mumble, you point at the box, you leave with the right cream and a bitter taste.
The sentence did not vanish. It never existed anywhere except in your head, and your mouth had never met it.
What the research found
Colin MacLeod and his team at the University of Waterloo gave a name to something actors have always known: the production effect (MacLeod et al., 2010). In eight experiments, students read a list of words; half of the words they read silently, the other half out loud. Then they were shown words and had to say whether they had seen them. The words spoken aloud were better recognised, with 10 to 20% more hits depending on the experiment, a gap the researchers describe as robust.
Their explanation is distinctiveness: a word you have pronounced carries one more trace, that of the movement of your mouth and the sound that came out of it, and that trace makes it easier to find again than its neighbours read in silence.
Noah Forrin and MacLeod (Forrin & MacLeod, 2018) then asked which part of speaking actually helps. They recorded 75 students reading words, then two weeks later had them learn a new list in four conditions: saying the word, hearing their own recorded voice say it, hearing someone else say it, or reading it silently. Memory followed exactly that order. Saying it aloud was best, hearing your own voice came just behind, and hearing your own voice beat hearing someone else’s. Two ingredients, then: the act of speaking, and the fact that the voice you hear is yours.
For you, this means something simple: a sentence rehearsed in silence is a sentence half learnt. The missing half is precisely the one you need in front of the pharmacist.
Do this today
Choose three sentences you would like to be able to say tomorrow. Take out your phone, open the voice recorder, and say them out loud, at normal volume, not whispering. Do not try to do it well: try to do it. Then listen back once. It will take two minutes and it may be unpleasant; a recorded voice surprises everyone. But you have just given those three sentences two more traces than they would ever have had in your head.
How our lessons use it
« Je m’appelle Nadia » ends with “Dis-le à ta façon”: three sentences about you, your name, your town, what you like on Saturdays, to be said out loud, not written. That is deliberate. Everything before it in the lesson happens in your head; this last step sends the words through your mouth for the first time. The honest limit
These experiments used lists of isolated English words, recognised a few minutes later, with Canadian students: not French sentences recalled a week on. The 10 to 20% gain shows up mainly when words read aloud and silently are mixed in the same list; reading a whole list aloud helps less. And Forrin and MacLeod tested memory for words, not the ease of saying them under pressure. Your voice helps; it does not do everything.

Does whispering count?
A little, but less. What helps is the movement of your mouth plus the sound of your own voice. Whisper on the train if you must, but as soon as you are alone, really speak.
I hate hearing myself on a recording.
Almost everyone does. You do not have to listen back straight away: the main benefit comes from saying it. Listen later, when you are ready, or not at all.
How many sentences a day?
Three is enough. It is not the quantity that matters; it is that those three sentences came out of your mouth, not just passed through your head.
