Numbers, dates, my age: I freeze every time — one item at a time, in short bursts

The problem

« Vous êtes né en quelle année ? » The question is simple, you understand it perfectly, and your mind goes blank. Mille neuf cent… quatre-vingt… what, again? You do the sum in silence while the clerk waits. At the till it is the same: « douze euros soixante-quinze » goes past too fast, so you hand over a twenty to be safe. You learnt the numbers from 1 to 100 in one evening, and they were gone in a week.

You do not have a problem with numbers. You have a problem of dose: too much at once, and nothing had room to settle.

What the research found

For twenty years, researchers in multimedia learning have been testing a simple idea: is the same lesson, cut into small pieces with a pause between each, remembered better than the lesson delivered in one block? They call it the segmenting effect. Günter Daniel Rey and his colleagues (Rey et al., 2019) gathered everything that had been published: 56 studies, 88 comparisons. For retention, meaning what people remember afterwards, the segmented version wins with an effect of g = 0.32, based on 67 comparisons and about 6,100 participants. For transfer, the ability to use what you learnt in a new situation, the effect is slightly larger, g = 0.36. These are modest but solid effects, and segmenting also lowers the mental load people report.

The mechanism is working memory: you can only hold a handful of items at a time. A number like « quatre-vingt-dix-sept » is already a small sum in itself; if you swallow thirty of them in one session, each wipes out the last before it has been filed. A pause between pieces gives the first one time to settle before the next arrives.

This is not only a laboratory matter. Philip Guo, Juho Kim and Rob Rubin (Guo, Kim, & Rubin, 2014) analysed 6.9 million viewing sessions of online course videos. Short videos were by far the most likely to be watched to the end; beyond about six minutes, attention falls away whatever the total length. The authors recommend cutting content into segments of under six minutes. Your attention has a natural length; you may as well work with it.

Do this today

Take a single number: the year you were born, say. Say it out loud in full, slowly, five times. Then close your eyes and say it again. That is all for today, three minutes at most. Tomorrow you add your age. The day after, the price of your coffee. One item a day, never two, and each day you say the previous ones again before adding the new one. In two weeks you will have the ten numbers you actually use, and they will hold.

How our lessons use it

« Je m’appelle Nadia » is deliberately tiny: a short story, three details to recall, then three sentences about yourself. Nothing more in the same session. The same goes for « L’ascenseur » on our YouTube channel: a brief story, and in the shadowing version a pause after every sentence, so you repeat one piece at a time and never the whole block. You can stop halfway and pick it up tomorrow; it is built for that. Start with « L’ascenseur ».

The honest limit

Rey’s meta-analysis covers multimedia lessons, often in science, segmented by the system, not language learners practising numbers on their own. A g of 0.32 is a modest effect: cutting things up helps, it does not work miracles. Guo and colleagues measured how long people watched a video, not what they remembered from it. And for 70, 80 and 90, no amount of segmenting will spare you from repeating them a fair number of times.

Why are 70, 80 and 90 so hard?

Because French builds them by adding and multiplying: soixante-dix, quatre-vingts, quatre-vingt-dix. Treat them as words in their own right, not as sums.

How long should a session be?

Three to five minutes. If you feel your attention slipping, that is the signal to stop, not to push. You come back tomorrow.
